Hello, and Happy 2013 everyone!
I thought I'd take a moment and reflect on my 2012 experience and my goals for this year. I check dA daily, and I think that if I post my list of goals here where I can see it it'll motivate me to keep it up and start getting things done. I also have some close friends and a few really kind people who follow me even though I haven't posted anything yet, and I feel like I should let you guys know that yes, I am working on various things, and yes, I will actually begin posting them. Maybe not this week, or this month, or until December, but I will at some point. Anyways, here goes...
This year was really about learning for me. I had known about dA for a few years, but I finally created an account in February, mainly to keep track of the amazing Homestuck fanart I kept coming across. Seeing what artistic magyyks they could create with only a tablet and a computer program was liberating. For the first time I began looking at pieces and thinking "Maybe I could do something like that."
So I started drawing compulsively. I saved up my money and bought my first tablet this summer, and after testing out a few other programs I settled on Photoshop. After a lot of frustration and some initial shitty drawings, I was finally able to get comfortable with it to the point where I could draw something for a few friends, like Glaceon58
. For Christmas my boyfriend gave me the English version of Easy Paint Tool Sai, and although it's another learning curve to adjust to I'm liking what I see so far!
However the tools do not make the artist (as I quickly discovered), so I hunted all over dA. I found tutorials about everything I could think of. I bought reference books. I started off interested in manga and anime and ended up rejecting it to search for my own style. I realized that using references is a good thing, that facial differentiation isn't as hard as it looks, and that you can learn something from all of your sketches, even the one you think is the shittiest. I also discovered some really amazing artists this year and following them on their personal journeys has made me really dedicated to doing the same thing this year. Which brings me to...
Goals for 2013
I have a list of things that I want to accomplish and/or start on this year. Hopefully I will share them with you. There is a possibility that I won't. To be honest, it is very hard for me to share what I draw with other people. I am not what you would consider a naturally gifted artist. For the vast majority of my life my drawings absolutely sucked. Although I have long tried to improve, it has only been in the past year and a half that I have felt like I have made significant progress, and I still have a long way to go. I really want this to be the year that I really sit down and improve and get the courage to be more ambitious and share what I've done with other people. Anyways, here is my list of goals for 2013:
-Continue to improve anatomy and facial diversity
-Really work on hands
-Be bolder when shading
-Start attempting backgrounds and giving characters context
-Get more comfortable with Photoshop and Sai
-Improve digital coloring, especially eyes and hair
-Start the Marinastuck series
-Possibly do some WDWstuck, or at least plan it
-Cosplay this 413 (pictures will definitely be shared from this)
-Finalize all of my OC designs
-Do more fanart of other things, like A:TLA, LoK, HP, PJO
-Find more artists, strike up conversations with the ones I already know, and take all the advice I get to heart-Be brave enough to post things online
So thank you if you read all of this. I'm glad that you guys believe in me and I'm excited to see where this next year takes all of us. I hope that your year will be filled with wonderful things, and that you accomplish whatever you set out to accomplish too! ^-^
Much love, Nat
